Yes, I tend to agree. While a sudden collapse might bring tremendous suffering, a slow decline on the other hand might play out well. The dark ages following large civilizations appear dark because there are no self-aggrandizing kings to record their marvelous deeds, while the populace (at least those lucky enough to survive the calamity) enjoy a peaceful and quiet, sometimes even prosperous life working towards building up a new civilization.
