As you can see on the chart above, and on the ones that will follow, I use four categories when it comes to energy use. The first one is called the World (colored green), representing global energy demand. The second category (with dark blue) was reserved for OECD countries, an alliance of 38 western and western-aligned nations including the USA, Canada, Australia, most members of the European Union, Japan and South Korea (with Mexico and Chile on top among others). The European Union (marked with light blue) thus represents a subset of OECD countries, following its own closely aligned political and economic agenda (in full sync with the US, of course). Data for the rest of the world — or the global majority — including China, Russia, India, Africa, and most Asian and Latin American countries are shown in orange. Chart: own work.
