I have to say, that I fully agree. Once the wealth pump has been set up, it first sucks all resources dry, then it turns on the people supporting it. There are some archeological anecdotes of societies where this apparently did not happen (Catal Huyuk comes to mind) - but they did not last forever either. If we really can't seem to break away from boom and bust cycles, maybe we should simply accept it as perfectly normal...
