From a pure biological perspective all this greed and hoarding is alienating us, causes a huge cognitive dissonance and a lot of stress (except for psychopaths). On the other hand it is hugely profitable, and since increasing wealth leads to increasing influence and power this has become way how most modern societies work (and this why our nations are increasingly led by psychopaths).
